I get a lot of e-newsletters. New ones come every day whether I read them or not. Sometimes I get ideas that I can share with you to help you look at the work in a different way.
This morning I got a newsletter from RealAge.com with an article from Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen about how to reduce stress. Mmm….Looking for a job is quite stressful. Maybe I can learn something.
Turns out good posture is more than something mom nagged about. As I think about posture, as I sit slumped over my computer, I can almost feel Mom’s finger poking into the middle of my back! Stand up straight, she would say.
The doctors advise us:
Think confident and showy. Act like a peacock spreading its feathers — and take up more space. When you assume an expansive, powerful position, you actually change your hormone levels. It boosts testosterone, which helps with pain tolerance, and decreases cortisol, a major stress hormone. Acting powerful makes you feel powerful, more in control, and better able to cope with any physical (or emotional) hurt that life throws your way.
Standing up very straight and taking up a larger space like a lion or peacock sends signals to your brain that you are large and in charge, reducing the stress hormones and increasing pain or stress tolerance.
Who’d have thought?
As I am boarding this crowded plane in a thunder storm I take a deep breath, release it slowly and push back my shoulders, suck in my gut and hold my head up high. Guess what? I feel better!
Next time you are standing in the parking lot prior to an interview or staring at the phone to make a cold call, try it yourself! Become that lion or peacock. Be confident that you have a lot to share. See if you don’t find a tiny bit more confidence and peace.
