Losing your own job is tough. Lord knows I know the feeling. But it is so much worse when your spouse is impacted. You feel so helpless because there is little you can do to make him or her feel better.
Here are a few things you can do to be supportive:
- Take a moment to drown your sorrows. If you don’t drink find some other inexpensive way to commiserate. Take a moment to accept what has happened and be sad for a moment. But only a moment. You have hard work to do!
- Double check your resources. Make sure you can pay your mortgage and most important bills like food and utilities. If you can’t, fess up to it right away and make adjustments in your lifestyle. Don’t wait until it is too late. Don’t assume your spouse will get another job right away. Maybe it will happen. That would be great. But plan for the worst just in case.
- Talk to your kids. They know something is going on. Reassure them you have things under control. Talk about changes in lifestyle while one wage earning parent is laid off. They need and want to be an active part of the solution.
A small investment in the beginning pays off well when your spouse gets a job faster in the end. You might find these articles interesting:
