Not all is lost. Companies are still hiring; people are still working, and we all need to believe that those in charge will make the decisions they need to ensure the USA gets back on track so that everyone can thrive.
Yes, I did say companies are still hiring. People are still going on job interviews. People are still searching for new jobs and new careers and there are job openings out there. The trick is in finding them and doing this with an effective job search. And having a plan for a job search is crucial, especially in today’s changing world.
This year at the Interview Doctor, we have also been changing. I want to share some of these new changes with you. Because frankly, the old way of applying for jobs by sending in resumes to job posting sites will not work.

Recently I made an investment in myself! I took a LinkedIn Learning course, Building Business Relationships, presented by Simon T. Bailey.
I’ve been following Simon for a few years now. I appreciate his honest, open point of view towards leadership. He is a nice guy with great ideas trying to make a difference in this complicated world. And I love that!
So, I invested one hour to learn more about how Simon looks at networking. Turns out our views mesh nicely.
Simon Bailey says, “Business relationships are career currency.” He offers tips on how to grow your career by building strong business relationships. I see a direct translation to the skills needed to network effectively, including:
Establish your personal brand. In particular, behave in a way that inspires trust. Trust is the foundation for networking, giving confidence to others that you will be there for them when they need something.
Build relationships with people you meet or work with by impacting others. What you can do to help someone else? Serving others comes back to you in spades when you need help in the future.
Networking is a two-way street. You can’t reach out to “network” only when you need something. That isn’t networking. That is asking for favors without a basis. Networking is reciprocal, built on a relationship of give and take between people who respect one another.
Simon’s concrete suggestions on how to build relationships mesh well with my recommendations. I highly recommend this course for your ongoing personal development. Dear Interview Doctor,
I had a great job interview a few weeks ago. I seemed to get along with everyone. I had great answers. I saw good overlap between my skills and the company’s needs. But I’ve never heard back. What is going on? Should I move on or hold on?
Dear Hold On Tight,
Don’t assume silence means anything! In this crazy job search world, radio silence does not mean no.
This happens all the time. Think about what might be happening on the other end. The hiring manager could be slammed with some emergency. She could be traveling. She could have a huge project crisis that cam up suddenly. Maybe her boss has a bigger priority that is taking up her time. Or something happened in her personal life like a vacation or a family crisis. We do not know.
These distractions take the hiring manager’s eye off the recruiting ball. It is human nature to fill in information vacuums with what sounds logical to us at the time. Usually we decide it must be something about us. I did something wrong in the interview. Or worse, I am “too” something. Too black or white, too tall or short, too old or young. We take this silence very personally when it might not have anything to do with us at all.
It is very possible that what is going on has absolutely nothing to do with you. We need more information. Make follow-up a normal part of your interview routine. You want to be somewhere between a pest and a ghost.
Your follow-up process should include:
Should you go to HR? I am not sure I would unless I was in HR. If you established a really good relationship with the HR person while in the process, then by all means talk to them but don’t be surprised if it is a dead end. The HR folks are busy and they have little invested in getting you hired other than paying attention to their hiring stats. I don’t mean to be mean here. The hiring manager is your target. They will be making the decision and working with you every day.
At some point you might decide to throw in the towel. I won’t blame you. Just be sure you followed up with at least 3 or 4 steps about a week to 10 days apart before calling it quits. At that point, if they want you, they will come to you. You move on to the next target. There are always more targets!
Radio silence is normal and not always (or usually) related to you. Do not draw any conclusions from radio silence. I’ve seen companies come back months after interviews assuming they can pick up where they left off. Follow-up as much as you want but please have a follow-up process in which you talk professional to professional to the hiring manager on a regular basis. Or at least you try. And NO BEGGING!! You are better than that!
Recently, Stephen sent in an email asking a question about his job search as he was getting frustrated because he was getting nowhere with his activities.
He asked this …
“I feel like I am spinning my wheels. I seem to be busy every day with my job search but at the end of the week, I can’t identify one accomplishment. My job search seems to be taking forever and is getting more frustrating every day. I can’t seem to get any traction. What can I do to get my search back on track?”
Well Stephen, I feel your pain.
You can’t control when you will get a job, so it is hard to find something to celebrate until you get a job. It is hard to know if you are making progress and it often leads to a continuous sense of frustration and failure.
As a job search and career coach, I tell my clients that a job search is like a project plan without an end date.
While you can’t control the end date when you receive a job offer, you can control your own activity with a solid Job Search Marketing Plan.
(I say Marketing plan, because you really are marketing yourself!)
Like any project, you need a project plan that breaks this huge initiative of finding a job into bite-sized pieces, with short-term goals. You can celebrate an achievement of a short-term goal even if you don’t get a job that day. This is called a Job Search Marketing Plan.
A Job Search Marketing Plan is not busy work. It is a plan with a goal of finding a job.
Since you design this project plan, you elect which tasks you want to accomplish in any given week or month.
You want to select high-value activities and goals that move you forward.
I like to measure progress with my clients in terms of “coffee goals.” It takes a large number of LinkedIn connections, leading to a number of conversations that lead to a few coffee meetings to build relationships with folks who can help your cause.
We use a daily activity tracking checklist with our clients and students so that they can see what accomplishments happened from their work. Tracking this activity is key to knowing what work you put in to reach your ultimate goal.
The best part of a good job search marketing plan is you WILL have something to celebrate!
Setting high-value, periodic goals around high-value actions moves your job search forward faster. You get that traction you are missing today when all you want to celebrate and plan for is the end result of this project – the job.
The better way to find that job is to create a plan that helps you see your success and achievements along the way – your job search marketing plan. Having a plan will stop the spinning wheels and help you get results.
