You Need Both a Resume and LinkedIn Profile in your Job Search

LinkedIn profile and resume are two different documents that start from the same basis but are used in two different ways.

In this video, Katherine Burik describes the different ways each tool is used.

Resumes are used as a take along to interviews, when you apply for jobs, when you work with a recruiter. It also is a great format for creating a strategic view of what you want.

Your LinkedIn profile can be used other ways. A good LinkedIn profiles is a passive way of making yourself available to recruiters. You can meet new people. It is a great way to learn.

Resumes 3.0: A unique perspective on resumes

I can hear you asking yourself, “Why would anyone write another book on resumes?”

“Aren’t they all the same?”
“Isn’t a resume a resume?”
We could just as well play the game, “when is a resume not a resume?”

A resume or a resume book is not like any other when it has a unique perspective. Here are seven reasons we think our new book, Resumes 3.0: Tools to Find Your Next Job, the second book in the Job Seeker Manifesto, has a unique perspective.

Resumes are not just a list of places you’ve worked. Your resume should be a compelling declaration of who you are, what you want, and what you have to offer.
Resumes are no longer a static written document. “Resume” has a different meaning these days. Resume stands for any of several places, virtual and literal, where you store your credentials.
“Resume” can be a virtual reference to your LinkedIn profile or any other on-line profile.
Resumes should be strategic. Every word carefully selected to demonstrate what you want and why you should get it.
Resumes are not really necessary. It is possible to get a job without a resume. You can even get a job with an ugly resume.
The process of creating a well written paper resume is a great exercise in editing. The space limitations force you to select your words carefully. Strategically even.
We titled the book, Resumes 3.0, to represent the next generation of resumes – a different perspective representing the future of job search. This is not your father’s resume book!

Not everyone agrees with this point of view. We wrote this book to share our unique perspective. Take it or leave it, I think it is better to have an opinion on the subject!

Resumes 3.0: Tools to Find Your Next Job is the second book in the Job Seeker Manifesto series and will be coming out on March 11th. The first book, Job Search Marketing Plan, helps you organize your search and the third book, “Tell Me About Yourself…” helps you express yourself. In the middle are the tools you need to help you make your dream a reality in today’s marketplace.

Formatting a New Approach to Resumes

Recently Tom (not his real name!) sent me his resume to get my opinion and to network. Tom has a nice background with many accomplishments and a good educational background. But the resume was formatted in a way that made it very hard for me to read.

I asked Tom if he was getting any traction with that resume. “Sure, I am getting a lot of responses. In fact I have an interview tomorrow.”

Mmmmmm….. This surprised me. It goes against everything I teach about formatting resumes. So I asked a few more questions. Turns out Tom, a lab technician, is getting a very good response with that resume when he applies for jobs online. His job is more likely to be successful through advertisements than other kinds of jobs.

Tom said he used to have nicely formatted resume that was more attractive to the eyes. He was frustrated at the very few responses he got. One day he got a call from an HR person who liked his background but there was a problem. His pretty resume was stuck in the mysterious inner workings of the software behind the ad. Would he be so kind to remove all formatting and resubmit his resume so they could consider him for this position?

Wow! This shocked me on so many levels.

An HR person called him directly? That doesn’t happen very often these days. Most important, they wanted to see a different kind of resume!

Tom revised his resume immediately to remove all formatting. He started getting all kinds of responses to his background. Now he has a different problem – how to interview better. But that is not the point.

By removing all formatting Tom can apply for online jobs more successfully. However he uses that unformatted resume for all purposes – that is a problem.

Bottom line: You might need two different resumes – one formatted for handout during the interviewing and networking stages and one unformatted to apply for jobs online. I learned something new this week. Thanks Tom!
