I pick up little tidbits of ideas wherever I go. If you keep your eyes open you can do this too. I even carry a notebook where I jot down these brilliant ideas put out in the world for anyone to catch.
Here is a recent gem:
People want to connect to your purpose, to your power to do something for someone who can’t do it for themselves.
Think about it for a minute. The job we do is a job that someone else cannot do. You are
performing a function or task that helps someone, moves an idea forward, or fulfills an obligation. If someone else could do it they would be doing it already.
This became apparent to me this evening at dinner time. In our house we grill almost every evening summer or winter. My husband, Kermit, finds it relaxing to putter around the patio with a glass of wine while the dinner sizzles on the grill. Many times even in the deepest winter we sit outside bundled in our heavy coats, mittens and scarves chatting about the days’ events. It is very relaxing. I flavor the meat and my husband does the grilling. Since we grill so frequently we cook inside much less often. We even grill our Thanksgiving turkey!
This evening I prepared dinner using leftovers from grilling a pork loin the other day. I turned leftover grilled pork loin into a full meal with mashed potatoes, gravy and peas. It was delicious. But as I cooked I realized that my husband does not do this kind of cooking and I seldom grill. We are comfortable with our roles and responsibilities.
I connect with my husband’s purpose. I have the power to cook in the house and he has the power to cook outside. We fit together well.
We complement each other in boating too. Kermit is a Coast Guard certified 100 ton Captain. I am not. He has the power to do something that I cannot do for myself. He is the captain. I run the lines and tie the knots, something he does not do well. We fit together well because we understand our purposes and strengths.
What is your purpose? What strength do you bring to your life that give you power to do something for someone who can’t do it for themselves? Maybe this power is prominent in your personal life or maybe at work. You can’t value it until you understand what “it” is.
You must understand your purpose and strengths to distinguish yourself from other people. Your purpose and strength make you special.
