3000 and Counting! Yesterday I accepted my 3000th LinkedIn connection thanks to the power of networking and goal setting!
And I am pretty pleased with myself!!
I know there is a debate between folks who think you should connect with everyone without regard and those who limit their connections to only a very few people who are close colleagues. I fall somewhere in the middle.
I want to take advantage of the leverage from having many connections but I also want to know the people I connect to. I believe it is possible to do both.
I have talked to almost every one of those fine people either on the telephone or via email so I have some idea of what we have in common and how we might be able to help each other.
Building relationships through networking with LinkedIn should happen more often than just when you need a new job. Actually if you wait to start networking until you need a new job you miss the point.
Networking is about building relationships and helping the people you know. They will return the favor someday when you need help.
This is also a testament to goal setting. I decided in 2006 to figure out how to utilize LinkedIn to expand my networking. It took a while get to 100 connections. I had a deep seated fear that the people on the other end of my invitation would somehow think less of me for reaching out. The more I reached out, the smaller that fear became. It took me about 10 years to achieve this milestone, one connection at a time.
My 3000th connection is Tammie Mills, an HR Assistant for RJ Matthews Company. Tammie participated in a workshop I conducted at Kent State University Stark Campus on ways to improve corporate interview methods. She is positive and enthusiastic about networking and using alternative methods of recruiting.
Tammie reached out to me after I invited everyone in the class to connect with me on LinkedIn. Actually Tammie was one of the very few in the class who actually reached out. This is pretty common. Only about 10% of participants connect with me after speaking engagements or workshops. I am not sure why.
Tammie and I have about 30 connections in common. I am pretty well connected throughout my community so it is likely that I have multiple common connections with many people here. I also have connections around the country and around the world.
To recognize this big occasion in my networking life, I am sending Tammie a full set of The Interview Doctor books. I will schedule coffee with her to get to know Tammie better and see how I can be helpful.
