I was thinking about an article on LinkedIn that I read a while ago, “Six Ways to be Genuinely Unforgettable”, that really made me think. What makes me different from the next guy? How do I stand out from the crowd?
If you are one of many people at work, what makes you stand out? If you are one of many job seekers, why should the hiring manager remember you? If you are trying to get promoted, what have you done lately that makes you different?
It is a great question.
We all think we are unique and unforgettable, just like we all think our kids are above average. But they are not all above average, are they?
We all have mostly the same stuff and do about the same things every day. We eat regular meals, go to work or school, spend time with the kids, and sleep. Maybe we have an activity or two that we do during the week to break up the typical tedium.
How memorable does that make you?
Do something outrageous to be different. Exercise muscles you seldom use – walk home from work, go to a different grocery store, climb a mountain, use a different piece of equipment at the gym, go tobogganing, work from a different spot in your office just to get a different perspective,
As the author says, the goal is not to accomplish something worthwhile.
Your goal is to collect experiences. Experiences, especially unusual experiences, make your life a lot richer and way more interesting – to you and to other people.
When you have unique experiences you have something different to talk about. You are suddenly memorable!
When I tell people I am from Chicago I immediately become memorable in Cleveland. When I tell people I just returned from a 13 month trip on my boat I am unforgettable because I’ve done something the average person has not done. I’ve done the BridgeClimb in Sydney Harbor and scuba dived on the Great Barrier Reef. All cool stuff! Sometimes I take side roads instead of the highway – just for a different experience!
I can talk about these things for hours to someone who wants to hear something different. I am memorable. I am not bragging. My experiences make me different which makes me memorable.
Another way to be different is to create a signature look. One friend loves to knit. She almost always wears something she created. It is her thing. When I think of Judith I remember the beautiful knitted accessories. When I think of Diane I think of the funky yet tasteful jewelry she wears. It is her thing.
Men can do this too. Matt only wears shorts to social events year round. It is his thing. You can say, “You know, Matt, the guy with the beard who wears shorts in the winter?” and people nod and say, “Sure, I know Matt”.
In this day and age of mass uniformity and widespread social media, what are you doing to be memorable? How will I remember who you are in the big wide world?

I muttered under my breath, stupid squirrel. Does this story from
What a concept!
